Sorry for the chiming!!
This is a short overview of when I had to replace the overdrive relay in my 1992 Volvo 240 Station wagon (Automatic Transmission). This relay controls the transmissions solenoid valve which lets the car shift from third to fourth gear for highway cruising speeds. The location of the relay is if you remove the glove box, look to you left and underneath the vent piping clipped in is a (roughly) 2''x1' rectangular box. This overdrive relay is white and clipped in tight, it took a significant amount of tugging and wiggling to get out. When you pull the relay out make sure it is still plugged in and the ignition is turned to OFF. The new relay I had bought was a simple drop in replacement (I just had to remove the old one and plug the new one in) I'm keeping all the original parts so don't worry the overdrive relay is stored away in a safe place
Here are some quick directions to putting in the relay.
1) Remove all of the glove box screws and set them aside
2) Close and slowly remove glove box, take note of the glove box light wire which is usually taped to the top of the glove box.
3) Look to your left under the vent piping and ID the overdrive relay (White rectangle 2''x1''
4) Wiggle the relay out being careful not to pull any of the connectors in the black plug it is attached to out. You can pull the black plug just not the wires
5) Pull old relay form the black plug
6) Put new relay in the black plug
7) Nestle the new relay under the vent piping.
8) Turn on Volvo and test the overdrive by clicking the button on the shifter.
9) If the light clicks on and off with you clicking the button, reassemble the glove box and test drive.
10) Get up to 30 MPH and then shift into overdrive and continue to accelerate the Volvo should upshift and your work is done. For further testing repeat this step on a road you can get up to 55mph.
