Hello!
Since I have posted a couple of guides on this forum, I thought I could post my two volvo "projects" also.
The first one is my D24TIC 945 1993, I have owned it for 2,5 years now and I have used it for everything from driving to school/work, transporting stuff and having fun in the wintertime.
Since the previous owner used it to tow and transport heavy objects, it does not look very good: it has schratches and some dents, but the mechanical part is OK!
Since it's such a easy car to work on, the regular owner can fix many problems on it by himself. I have changed the brakes, springs, shock absorbers, wired some better stereo system parts etc.
Here are some pictures of the first Volvo.

farm2.staticflickr.com/1839/44099460561_e6c8b9974f_b.jpg

After I while, got my hands on a 1996 944, but it didn't have an engine, gearbox or a driveshaft, but it has leather interior, all electric windows etc.
farm2.staticflickr.com/1774/42289842440_f0d2cdd335_b.jpg

Half a year later I brought an D24 engine for it together with everything I need and more.
Since I wasn't able to rent a trailer, I had to transport the engine in my trunk Grin

farm2.staticflickr.com/1772/44050136032_8115a1ffbb_c.jpg

Before I can install the engine, I have to sort the engine mounts out and since I had the time, I cleaned the rust off in the engine compartment and gave it a overall little wash.

After grinding off rust, priming and painting:

Currently I really don't have to fix anything on my 945, so when I get the time and chance to work on the 944, I will post pictures here and keep you posted.
To sum up, neither of the Volvos are in perfect visual condition, but I like them anyway.

Nice pictures Torbik thumpsup. This project threads will be very interesting. It is very fun but hard work to renovate this car, but its lucky that it is a Volvo and car parts are easy to findjapp.
I would really want to do this kind of work to my Red 745. Out with the engine and fix rust and paint in the enginebay. Perhaps i take the time to do it later.

Looking forward to more pictures and inspiration from you Torbik. And the guides you did for the forum is surely going to help other members of the site..Holy

Hello again after a long time!
Today I started to replace the front springs on my red 945 and didn't bother to buy new strut bearings for the job as I thought the old ones will be okay. That was a mistake Smile As i removed the driver side strut, the bearing cover was rusty and the bearing had a little bit of slop in it when I turned it between my hands.
farm5.staticflickr.com/4918/45218116865_9720fb27b6_c.jpg
After seeing that, I reassembled everything and will order new bearings and hopefully next weekend I can finish the job.
I will try to make a guide also on replacing the springs and shock absorbers, although it is a fairly simple process on 7/940-s - let's see how well I can take pictures when working outside Santa

Meanwhile I have been working on my 945 rear wiper. The motor was bad, so I replaced that and also the wiper arm bushing, on to which the M16 nut goes to secure it against the trunk was rotten away, so I made a few of my own. I will assemble everything tomorrow and hopefully I will get a working rear wiper.

thumpsup I know that the rear wiper can almost be rutted. All that dirt, rain and snow does make its markes on the rear wipers. I have done the same work on my 745 with the wipers. Nice update Torbik Holy

I removed the sub frame to weld a motor mount holder to it.
Without the engine in the removal was very easy to be honest.
Also, the steering rack removal was easy, the volvo engineers have done a good job.

Hello!
I haven't posted in a long time. On the red volvo, I have replaced the strut bearings and the bearing plates that were so rusty in the last post.
Then I dragged a 60kW D24 to the garage and put it on the 944.

live.staticflickr.com/7874/46000883845_df738c2da1_b.jpg

Then I bought a 90kW D24TIC and took the 60kW out of the 944 Grin and replaced it with the D24TIC block.

My only question is that can someone say from this picture ( I know, the quality is bad) if the transmission is a m90 one. It seems like one, based on pictures from the internet.

Hello everyone!
For one and a half year, I haven't had the time to post anything here.
In the mean time i have installed the D24TIC engine in the last picture on the 944, (yes the gearbox is M90). The M90, M46 and M47 gearboxes have all different length drive shafts, buy luckily I got one for a good price.
After that, I improved the wiring on the 944, connected the radiators, power steering and everything else and started the engine. The engine runs good, but I still have to remove the high pressure pump to fix some seals on it because it leaks quite badly. Progress has been slow.
I have used the red 945 daily and have done regular maintenance on the breaks, timing belt, etc. Today I changed the control valve for the interior temperature radiator and next week I will deal with the vacuum pump. I hope I will take and post pictures also.

Hi Torbik

Nice to see you again here on the site.
Sometimes we have to fix with other things instead of the Volvo. I have been there when you dont have energy or time to fix car trouble. And now we have the time for winter and cold weather again. Its not that super fun to fixing with bolts and cars in the winter time.
I see you have change the timing belt thumpsup. How far has the car gone?. Nice to have replaced the timing belt you dont have to replace it for a long time.
Uber nice to see some updates anyway thumpsup

415 000 its not much on a Volvo 940 when its taking care of with oil change and service stuff thumpsup

Hello Volvo people!
I have been busy with the red volvo and enjoying the snow!
Before the snow I replaced my heater hore valve that was leaking and that someone had repaired:

live.staticflickr.com/65535/51851007770_dea5ab4c5f_c.jpg

live.staticflickr.com/65535/51850681679_09c5f3ae48_c.jpg

A very nice guide on the replacement is by Skandix: https://www.skandix.de/en/documents/i...bc1c34677e
But one thing I would definitely do is unbolt the gas pedal via the two bolts next to it and release the gas cable and set the pedal aside to gain more room.

Yesterday and today I started to replace the old valve cover gasket, put the original studs in the head that hold the valve cover nuts and change the vacuum pump:

live.staticflickr.com/65535/51851008550_43936f3d80_c.jpg

live.staticflickr.com/65535/51850682434_c2efc9f841_c.jpg

If for some reason your valve cover studs have been removed and you are reinstalling them then clean and dry the thread pockets first before tightening the stud or the hydraulic pressure might damage your block!

A interesting problem that I ran into is following: Volvo (and the VW vehicles using the D24 engine) should have 2 types of vacuum pumps, the earlier and the late model. The earlier model uses a longer pushrod and the later model a shorter pushrod. When I installed the new type of pump with the new pushrod, there was like 5mm of gap between the pushrod and the camshaft lobe in the "rest" position. When I put the old style pushrod with the new pump on the engine, the pushrod was too long and I couldn't turn the engine over. Gap:

live.staticflickr.com/65535/51850354791_9e53b22d32_h.jpg

Strange....
Anyway since I don't like the idea of the pushrod bouncing around while the engine is running and causing dynamic and shock loads on the camshaft, I took another good old style pump from another of my engines and used it Cool
Changed the gearbox oil, I have driven ca. 50 000km with the volvo and I don't know when it was last changed. Should do the differential too Grin

Sadly, there was a casualty as well:

live.staticflickr.com/65535/51850354716_5104f88bd5_c.jpg

My steering rack, which was leaking a bit before bought the farm and is junk Sad
The failure was sudden and fast.
Will have to get a new one.

Tomorrow I will change the front brake shields for new flashy white ones!

Also I found this website, where you can look up your volvo spare part catalog, very useful: https://www.gcp.se/en/catalogues/

The heater core valve is a pretty easy work on this models. But if you doing this on a Volvo 240 you get a brain damage Grin. Nice work Torbik and thank you for the link to that guide thumpsup.
I see the works continues. To bad about the steering rack. Hope you get a better one Smile
Grin Yea after 50k miles i think the Volvo was happy to get new gearbox oil. And yes when you are up to speed its a smart idea to replace the differential oil as well thumpsup.

Nice work and pictures Torbik thumpsup

Hello again!
As promised, I will show you what I did today:
For some time, my brake dust shields were rusted away.
The job is quite easy: remove the wheel, break free the big 36mm bolt holding the wheel bearing (it is best to do when your friend is pressing the brake and if you don't have friends Grin Grin you can just put a screwdriver in the brake rotor slot and let it hold against the brake caliper holder. Then remove the brakes, the 36mm nut and the bearing assembly. Be careful that you don't spill the bearing parts when handling it!
Next come the 3 dust shield screws. Mine were very rusty and stuck so the 6mm Allen head socket didn't work. I tried pliers too but in the end welded nuts on the old parts.
Note that when you weld/use a wire brush/ hammer etc near the bearing shaft it is wise to protect it with a rag or something similar.

live.staticflickr.com/65535/51852103736_c96949f453_c.jpg

live.staticflickr.com/65535/51852175013_5295428cf1_c.jpg

After that install the new bolts ( They are DIN 912 M8x1,25 L=10mm).

It is also recommended to paint the dust shield before to maximize volvo coolness Cool Cool

live.staticflickr.com/65535/51852174893_68c1b2fb2a_c.jpg

Don't mind the dirty brake calipers Grin
